According to a recent article in the Portsmouth Herald, 24 new teachers have been hired this year in the Portsmouth, NH, school district. Twelve of them are UNH graduates. Ten of the twelve are entering either their first or second year of teaching.
Superintendent Ed McDonough notes in the article that while experience is important, “younger teachers bring unique perspectives, technological savvy and the latest in educational training to their students.”
Students in the UNH teacher education program undertake a year-long internship on their way to certification, an experience that the new teachers credit for giving them the confidence and preparation they need to enter into their first year of teaching.
