Associate Professor of German Mary Rhiel has been selected to receive the 2015 German Educator of the Year from the Northern New England chapter of the American Association of the Teachers of German (Vt., N.H., Maine). Among the reasons for the selection, chapter officer Cynthia Hodgdon cites Rhiel’s dedicated support of students, both those studying German at UNH and at schools throughout New Hampshire; her passionate leadership of the German program and the Berlin study abroad program at UNH; and her outstanding scholarship and pedagogical skills.

Rhiel joined the UNH faculty in 1986. She has served as chair of the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures and currently directs the German program and the Berlin study abroad program. She teaches all levels of German language and culture. Rhiel’s research covers nineteenth and twentieth-century German literature, cultural studies, German film, and Asian-German studies.
